Springs of Hope

Excavating the Sacredness of Education

My work supports teachers in identifying their source of joy through the sacred in the classroom. This transcends not only the teaching experience but it moves into their life. Helping them to live with a higher quality of happiness and freedom.

Central to Springs of Hope: Excavating the Sacredness of Education is The 7 Pillars acronym B-R-E-A-T-H-E

Imagine a revitalized workforce of educators, equipped with the tools and mindset needed to thrive in both the classroom and their personal lives. Client Testimonials

Sharon gave us tangible ways that we can keep education sacred in our own classrooms and lives. It shifted my perspective on teaching and gave me resources to take care of myself so that I can show up authentically for my students.

Nina C 2nd Grade Teacher, NJ

I left every meeting feeling validated, heard, and refreshed for the following weeks to come. Our meetings were centered not just on our practices but on us as individuals. Sharon designed them(the sessions) and carried them in a way in which we were felt as(like) the center and then we reflected how it would look and feel like to take our learning into the classroom and what benefits it will have. What I appreciated about her(Sharon’s) form of feedback is that it made me reflect but not judgemental because I am very self-critical but light and open-minded from a pondering standpoint. It came at the perfect time for my induction. I was considering leaving Education. The way Education is going leads to an overwhelming amount of stress, a sense of ineffectiveness because despite all your efforts, it's never enough, and ultimately burnout. Re-centering my focus on valuing my sacredness and, therefore, my students' sacredness. It served as a Spring of hope, allowing me to renew my passion and joy for teaching.

(Springs of Hope)This is a way to look within and remember your purpose when it is hard.

Dominique M 2nd Grade Teacher, NJ

Excavating the treasures of my students has helped me excavate my own treasures. (Journaling) I was able to learn more about myself. Journaling I learned a lot about my students struggles and anxieties when it comes to school, specifically math.

Jennifer Q 9th Grade Math Teacher, NJ

Making space for self care we are the hidden treasure for many of our students. Sometimes we can be there only role models or people they aspire to be and for that we must be present.

Sharon A Marcus -- The Teacher's Teacher

Sharon Marcus was destined to connect the sacred with education. With 50 plus years in the field of education, Sharon is known as The Teacher’s Teacher, she is the advocate most educators don’t have in the schoolroom, the classroom, or in their own homes.

Raised as an army brat, Sharon traveled the world with her family—attending schools in Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Germany (Bamberg, Nuremberg, and Munich). While in Virginia, she experienced firsthand the sting of racism and inequality within the educational system. Yet amidst the inequities, she found light in her African-American teachers who instilled in her the sacred value of education and the power of self-worth. Later, her experiences in integrated schools where all of her teachers were caucasian—gave her a broader perspective on cultural identity, representation, and the invisible threads that shape a child’s sense of belonging and possibility.

Demonstrating her lifelong devotion to education, Sharon founded Courageous Schools, LLC and created the transformative program “Springs of Hope: Excavating the Sacredness of Education.” Since 2022, this program has been a vital part of Montclair State University’s Urban Teacher Project (UTP), addressing the urgent challenges of teacher burnout and attrition in urban districts. Through Springs of Hope, Sharon equips educators with professional and personal practices that rekindle their passion for teaching, helping them move from merely surviving to thriving—sustaining themselves, their purpose, and their students for years to come.

Sharon’s philosophy transcends conventional education. Her life experiences—from completing the Jersey Girl Triathlon to traveling across Asia, Africa, and Europe—infuse her approach with vitality, reflection, and reverence. She believes that to truly teach, one must nurture the whole being—mind, body, and spirit—inviting educators to slow down, breathe, and rediscover the sacred in their work.

In essence, Sharon Marcus is more than an educator; she is a lifelong learner, storyteller, and guide. Rooted in empathy and over five decades of experience, she continues to elevate the conversation around what it means to teach with purpose. Through her work, she helps educators excavate their inner wisdom, reconnect with their calling, and honor the sacredness within education itself.
